We Help Youth Soar!

FEFY's goal is to give young people the opportunity to experience the world of aviation.

Flight Experience for Youth (FEFY) is a 501c(3) organization that was founded in 2004 in response to a recognized need to give more young people the opportunity to experience the world of aviation.

FEFY funds flight training, ground school, and aviation experiences for young people age 21 and younger.

The programs that FEFY funds are run by Sugarbush Soaring at the Warren Sugarbush Airport.

Through the process of learning to fly, youth gain skills that go well beyond learning to pilot an aircraft. Flying requires deep knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, hands-on mechanical skills, and a high level of independence and responsibility. As youth master the skills necessary to be good pilots, they also cement the critical thinking and leadership that will serve them well throughout many areas of their lives. In learning to fly, students gain so much more.

FEFY is run by a volunteer Board of Directors and is completely dependent on contributions from generous donors. Please consider making a donation to help support our Youth Programs. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.

BOD Members & Youth Advisors

Jen Stamp, President

Jen is a commercial pilot and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) in single engine airplanes and gliders. She started flying power planes in the late 1990s. When she moved to Vermont in 2004, she started flying gliders and began instructing and giving scenic rides for Sugarbush Soaring. In 2015, she and her husband Tom Anderson began running the Sugarbush Soaring youth programs. Working with young people in this capacity feeds her soul. Jen has been a member of the FEFY board since 2017. When she’s not flying gliders, she works as an aquatic ecologist for Tetra Tech’s Center for Ecological Sciences, flies a 1941 Taylorcraft (BC12-65), and enjoys biking, hiking and shooting hoops. She holds a BA in Biology from Dartmouth College and a MS in Environmental Sciences from Ohio University.

Eve Silverman, Treasurer

After my son, Alex Scaperotta, joined the line crew over 10 years ago, I became convinced of the deep and lasting impact that this experience can have on young people. I credit his development in life to FEFY and Sugarbush Soaring and feel dedicated to pay it forward by helping to ensure that these organizations can thrive for more and more kids. I have served on the boards of other organizations serving youth and the community such as Wilton Go Green and the Wilton Childrens Center in Wilton CT. I have an MBA from Yale University in public and private management and a background in brand management and marketing, having worked for companies such as Procter & Gamble, Nabisco, and Time Warner as well as private branding consultancies. My family now lives full time in Fayston. Eve joined the FEFY board in 2021.

Danny Burns, Secretary

Danny received his Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate in gliders in 2023 and will be working as a full-time glider instructor at the Warren Sugarbush airport this summer. He also holds a Private Pilot certificate in single engine power planes. When not at the airport, he is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA, welding, milling lumber or ski patrolling at the Sugarbush Ski Area. Danny has first-hand experience with the youth programs that FEFY supports. He participated in the Line Crew program for five summers and also worked as assistant airport manager at the Warren Sugarbush airport. After serving for several years as a Youth Advisor, Danny became a FEFY board member in 2019. Through the generous support of FEFY and the airport community, Danny attained his private pilot and commercial certificates in gliders, all while fostering countless other transferable skills that are now being used while he pursues his engineering degree.

Brian Wagner

Brian worked in the environmental testing and consulting field for 23 years before starting a teaching career in 2009. He has taught middle school students about science and recently transitioned to teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses to middle school/high students at Harwood Union. One of those courses, Aerospace Technology, explores: the physics of flight, the engineering design process where students produce their own radio-controlled plane, flight simulation, and the future of aeronautics. Brian is also a board member of Waterbury Local Energy Action Partnership (LEAP). Brian holds a BS in Chemistry/Geology from Keene State College, a MA in Education from Johnson State College, and is currently pursuing advanced graduate study at Northern Vermont University. Brian joined the FEFY board in 2018.

Emilio Arce

Emilio graduated from Virginia Tech in 1997 with a B.S., in Computer Science. Since then he has been designing and writing software. He holds a private certificate and instrument rating. Emilio joined the FEFY board in 2022.

"My journey as a father led me to Warren, VT, where I dropped off my son Sebastian for one of the youth soaring camps. When I returned a week later to pick him up, I could sense that something really special had taken place. Intrigued by his experience, my wife Claudia, Sebastian and I started making regular trips to the field, enabling him to maintain connections with the remarkable individuals he had met. The more I was exposed to the program, the youth and the community, the stronger my desire grew to become more involved.

As fate would have it, I was offered the opportunity to join the board, and without hesitation, I accepted. Serving as a board member has been an entirely new and fulfilling experience for me. In 1997, I graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Computer Science, and since then, I have enjoyed my career as a software engineer. Additionally, I am a recreational pilot, holding a private certificate. I’m very lucky to share my passion for aviation with my son and witnessing firsthand the immense impact that aviation and the supportive community at FEFY have on young people. I am convinced of its power to guide, inspire and motivate."

FEFY Youth Advisors

Braden Martens and Tim Wilson attend Harwood High School and have been members of the Sugarbush Soaring Line Crew program since they were 12 years old. Tim was Line Crew Chief in 2022-2023 and will be working as the Airport Operations Assistant this year, while Braden has taken over Line Crew Chief responsibilities. Both earned their Private Pilot certificates in gliders in 2023 and are working on their commercial glider certificates. They joined the FEFY board as Youth Advisors in 2022. Away from the airport, both enjoy flying and fixing radio-controlled (RC) aircraft, Tim loves math, music and being on the water, and Braden is very active in sports.
