Members enjoy reduced rates on flight instruction and aircraft rentals, and enjoy being part of a vibrant and supportive soaring community. Due to insurance regulations, Club membership is a requirement to solo and Flight Experience for Youth supports youth members (ages 21 and under) by paying their annual membership dues.

Obtaining an FAA pilot certificate is a major undertaking. It requires students to complete a minimum number of solo and dual flights, pass a rigorous FAA written exam (or two, as in the case of CFI certification), and successfully complete a practical exam—consisting of both oral and flight portions—with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).

FEFY covers the costs associated with certification for youth members, which are substantial, often including:

  • The FAA written exam (typically $175).

  • The DPE examiner fee (often $600 or more).

  • Flights required for checkride preparation and the flight portion of the checkride itself.

FEFY pays the dues and exam fees for SSA youth members, this season totaling more than $6,500!
